It’s time to call in The Sisterhood when…
Kids are grown and launched, the home eerily quiet. You thought you’d would love the solitude and now find it disconcerting. You busy yourself but careers and professional paths no longer inspire as they once did and projects like renovations are short term.
It’s time to shift and move on. This isn’t as easy as you thought…..your feet are glued to the floor. Stuck. Emotions are a raging inferno you didn’t expect. You’d looked forward to this thought that transitioning would be the best, the Yummiest time of life. Instead nagging, noisy fears have scratched their way to the surface.
What’s next? [don’t now] Who am I now? [not sure a stranger?] What do I want? [no idea] Is it too late to begin something new? [probably?] Am I too old to be relevant? [maybe?]
Time for the Sisterhood! Aaaahhh..the sisterhood. Where we can always find comfort, support and a good swift kick in the ****.
Sisterhood support can be the best way to not only ease through the transition and help release fear, anger, grief but envelope a sense of safety, happiness and optimism that keeps us healthy and yummy! The happiest people are those who have a tribe…or (in our case)…a sisterhood.
In the documentary film, HAPPY the older women of Okinawa, Japan (one of the famous blue zones where people enjoy unusually good health and long lifespans), talk about being sisters to each other. In his study of healthy aging, clinical neuropsychologist, Dr. Mario Martinez found that individuals who thrive throughout the aging process live in subcultures of like minded individuals who support a joyful and healthy outlook. Many people feel close to their family and close friends who have always served as their tribe, but we can all benefit from support outside that circle. When we connect with members of the sisterhood our hearts actually synchronize with each other and change the energy field around us. Have you felt this before? I know I have.
Becoming our best selves
Life Part II is a time to reach out and make new friends with youthful energy who don’t dwell in the past but are focused on the future. They mirror ourselves or who we want to be. Unhealthy community fosters poor health. Healthy community fosters true flourishing. There’s a new science called, Sociogenomics which is the study of the relationship between people’s social connections and their health and gene expression. The truth is that our health and our life will pretty much be the same as that of the people we hang around with (just as income tends to be the average of that of our five closest friends). Interesting.
How to create a Yummy Sisterhood
There’s nothing like a group of girlfriends to enhance each other’s life force.
The criteria for creating a Sisterhood is that it is nourishing for all and not a gripe or gossip session.
To create a positive Sisterhood start with positive uplifting Yummy Agers who know how to have fun.
Reach out to old friends and also to women you’ve recently met who clearly have great energy. Bond over recipes, movies, books, art, fitness or design an evening or weekend around doing something none of you have done before that sounds daring and fun. Here’s a perfect example…
On the off chance you hear of an Artist ‘Incubator’ – GO! That’s where I was last week – my friend Claire – an amazing multidisciplinary artist who is always up to something fun (in this case playing with ideas involving light, movement and shadow puppets) was the host.
I invited Pat who is game for anything, especially things of a creative nature. Everyone experimented with shapes and materials and then it was time for light and shadows. It was an “OH WOW” awesome evening, made better because it wasn’t something you’d do every day!
Get friends together to go kayaking, dancing, visit an indoor climbing wall or learn to meditate. Have a spa weekend, attend a spiritual retreat or a music festival.
Clothing swaps (I attended my first one a few weeks ago) are great fun, full of laughs, stories and allow you to leave your ‘clothing’ comfort zone and try new things. The one that I went to was extraordinarily uplifting for everyone! The two organizers brought together women from various corners of their lives and the introductions and bonding was complete in the first 30 minutes.
Life Part II is a time to release people who drain your energy and rebuild and consolidate with those who infuse you with fun, optimism, health and hope. It’s a time to belong to a Sisterhood and grow ageless and Yummy together!
